The REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band
The purpose of the REALIZE™ Band is to control hunger by limiting the amount of food that individuals need to eat before they feel like they are full. During a laparoscopic surgery procedure similar to the one used to place the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band, the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band is inserted into the abdominal cavity and fastened around the stomach. The REALIZE™ injection port is then inserted beneath the skin of the upper abdomen and is secured below the rib cage.
To make adjustments to the REALIZE™ Band after the procedure, Dr. Avara will inject saline solution into the injection port. The saline solution will travel from a tube to the inside of the band, where it causes the band’s soft, balloon-like material to expand. As a result, the upper portion of the stomach is tightened so that smaller amounts of food will satisfy the patient’s hunger. In this way, it is possible to adjust the REALIZE™ Band regularly so that patients can achieve the weight loss they desire.
Clinical trials have shown that patients who have the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band implanted are likely to have fewer complications than patients who undergo bariatric surgery with the LAP-BAND® System. Patients are also more likely to lose a greater amount of weight with the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band.
