Bariatric Practice Offering LAP-BAND® System Surgery in Ocean Springs, Mississippi

The important thing to remember about weight loss is that what works well for one person will not necessarily work for another. This is just as true when it comes to surgical weight loss. In addition to the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, we also offer LAP-BAND® System surgery at our Ocean Springs, Mississippi practice. Although the success rate of gastric banding is somewhat lower than that of gastric bypass, it has a number of significant advantages. Specifically, the procedure for placing the band is less invasive than Roux-en-Y surgery, the band itself is adjustable, and the procedure can actually be reversed if necessary. To decide which option is best for them, all patients should review the requirements for bariatric surgery candidacy and develop a detailed understanding of the risks involved.

What is LAP-BAND® System surgery?

The LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band is a specially designed medical device that is applied to the stomach through laparoscopic surgery. This silicone ring is wrapped around the upper portion of the stomach, essentially dividing the stomach into two sections – a small upper portion that fills up and triggers the sensation of being full after only a small amount of food is eaten, and the remaining lower portion, into which food passes slowly and can be digested normally.

How does the LAP-BAND® System work?

The effectiveness of LAP-BAND® System surgery relies on the simple principle of restricted stomach capacity. Most diet programs fail because they require people to stop eating before they feel satisfied. By segmenting off the upper portion of the stomach, however, this procedure allows people to feel full after eating only a small amount of food.

Adjustable and Removable

One of the primary benefits that LAP-BAND® System surgery patients at our Ocean Springs, Mississippi practice enjoy is the relative flexibility of the gastric band as compared to the changes produced by traditional gastric bypass surgery. When the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band is put in place, it is attached to an access port that is left just beneath the skin. Through this access port, the doctor can adjust the size of the opening between the upper and lower stomachs by increasing or decreasing the amount of saline solution contained in the gastric band. Therefore, patients who are not experiencing adequate results can have their bands tightened and those who may need a little more stomach capacity to meet their nutritional needs can have their bands loosened. The gastric band can even be adjusted to allow for the increased nutritional needs of a woman during pregnancy.

LAP-BAND® System surgery is also reversible; since there is no cutting or stapling of the organs, the gastric band can be removed at any time. In the majority of cases, the stomach returns to its natural shape and function shortly after removal surgery.

Recovery

Although LAP-BAND® System surgery is significantly less invasive than gastric bypass surgery and can be performed on an outpatient basis (the patient can go home immediately after the procedure), there will still be a period of restricted activity while the patient recovers. Most people are able to return to work between a few days and a week after surgery, but strenuous activity should be avoided for about four to six weeks.
