William T. Avara, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
William T. Avara, III, M.D., F.A.C.S. is a board-certified general surgeon, president of the Mississippi Coastal Trauma Region, and Director of Trauma Services at Singing River Hospital. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and he completed his residency in General Surgery at the University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Avara has received specialized training in the surgical treatment of obesity that includes completing a mini-fellowship in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. He is credentialed to perform bariatric surgery with the LAP-BAND® System and the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band, and he can also conduct the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass procedure. Dr. Avara has practiced general surgery in his community since 1987 and has performed over 400 bariatric procedures. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, and the American Society of Bariatric Surgery (ASBS).
