Bringing Bariatric Surgery to Biloxi, Gulfport, and All of Mississippi
At South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss, we recognize the importance of education to the weight loss process. We want all of our patients to understand their conditions and all aspects of treatment fully before undergoing surgery. We also recognize that each patient is unique and that what works for one person may not be helpful to another. For this reason, we offer three types of bariatric surgery to people in the Biloxi / Gulfport region of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Each one offers different advantages and drawbacks to potential patients.
Gastric Bypass
Roux-en-Y gastric bypass involves a combined approach that limits both the amount of food that can be eaten and the amount of calories that can be absorbed by the body. This procedure has the highest rate of success among surgical weight loss methods and makes it less likely that patients will regain weight that has been lost. Learn more about Roux-en-Y surgery by visiting our Gastric Bypass page.
LAP-BAND® System
Another bariatric surgery option at our Biloxi and Gulfport-area practice serving the Mississippi Gulf Coast is the LAP-BAND® System. Unlike gastric bypass surgery, which permanently alters the digestive tract, a gastric band simply restricts the size of the stomach, reducing the amount of food that can be eaten at a time. The procedure for placing the band is less invasive than gastric bypass surgery, and the band can be adjusted or removed if necessary. To learn more about how a gastric band works, visit our page on surgery with the LAP-BAND® System.
REALIZE™ Personal Banding Solution
The REALIZE™ Personal Banding Solution is comprised of the REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band and the REALIZE mySuccess™ program. The REALIZE™ Adjustable Gastric Band is inserted in a manner similar to that used for the LAP-BAND® Adjustable Gastric Band. REALIZE mySuccess™ is an interactive program that offers a comprehensive and innovative approach to supporting patients after their weight loss surgery procedures.
Candidacy
Surgical weight loss can help many people make dramatic changes in their health, lifestyle, and appearance, but it is not for everyone. Proper assessment of a patient’s candidacy is paramount, and our doctors take each patient’s health and well-being very seriously. Visit our Candidacy page to learn about our screening process and a few of the factors that make someone a good candidate for bariatric surgery.
Risks
It is important for potential patients to recognize that there is always a certain amount of risk involved in undergoing a surgical procedure. Understanding these risks prior to surgery can help to minimize the chances of complications occurring and make it easier for the patient to cope if a problem does arise. Potential patients can learn about the different types of risks associated with gastric bypass surgery, LAP-BAND® System surgery, and the REALIZE™ Personal Banding Solution by visiting our webpage dedicated to risks and complications.
Obesity
Obesity is a disease that affects all systems of the body. As with any disease, the key to overcoming it lies in our ability to understand its causes and how it works. Therefore, we take time with every patient to discuss obesity, what causes it, how it affects the body, and why it is so hard for so many to overcome. If you have been struggling with obesity and are considering bariatric surgery, the first step is to fully understand your condition. Visit our Obesity page to learn more.
