William T. Avara, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.
William T. Avara, III is a Board-Certified General Surgeon, President of the Mississippi Coastal Trauma Region, Director of Trauma Services at Singing River Hospital and Chairman of the Mississippi Department of the Health Trauma Advisory Board. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and he completed his residency in General Surgery at the University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Avara has received specialized training in the surgical treatment of obesity that includes completing a mini-fellowship in Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. He is credentialed to perform Bariatric Surgery with the LAP-BAND® System and the REALIZE®Adjustable Gastric Band, as well as the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) Procedure.
Dr. Avara has practiced General Surgery in his community since 1987 and has performed over 1,000 Bariatric procedures. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Bariatric Surgery, the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma, and the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS).
As a top Bariatric Surgeon in the Ocean Springs, Biloxi, Gulfport, and Mississippi Gulf Coast area, Dr. William Avara is involved in all aspects of our bariatric program and patient care. David M. Jenkins, M.D., F.A.C.S.
David M. Jenkins is recognized as the newest member to the South Mississippi Surgical Weight Loss Center team. However, he has years of experience in weight loss surgery. While a member of the US Air Force, he initiated weight loss surgery at Keesler and Eglin Air Force Bases. Dr. Jenkins home town is Ocean Springs, Mississippi. He is a Board Certified General Surgeon with over 20 years of experience in General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgery. Dr. Jenkins attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado and graduated in the top 10% of his class. He subsequently completed medical school at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, Mississippi. He served as a Surgeon in the Air Force and was the Chief of Surgery at Keesler, Eglin, and Lakenheath Air Force Bases. He also was the Program Director for the General Surgery Residency at Keesler for four years, responsible for training 49 General Surgeons. After retiring from the US Air Force with 26 years of service, Dr. Jenkins joined South Mississippi Surgeons in 2008 and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgeons.
